This was an Addition/Renovation for a young couple and their two children, to an existing house that was originally designed and built in 1939. Like many homes of this era, the Kitchen was not developed as a place of family gathering and social interaction, like modern kitchens and life-styles of today, and this was the seed for the desire, by the home owners, when they asked me to help them to ‘Update’ their home.
Originally, we began by looking at a more modest addition to try and accommodate their needs and budget, but after some initial enthusiasm for schemes that met their budget, the home owners concluded that they needed to grow both the addition and their budget and the resulting design was an outgrowth of this evolution.
To offset the added cost for the additional space, the home owners opted to install IKEA Kitchen cabinets, which offered a good price point, without sacrificing quality or looks.
The house is situated on a hillside lot, that offered very little area that was useable, so a large deck was developed, that hovered among the Fir trees, and offer a ‘contained yard’ that also serves as an additional outdoor ‘Living Room’ just off the new Kitchen addition.
